Why I Believe Jesus is God

Everyone knows that the earth rotates around the sun, but why do we believe this?  It's clear that the sun comes up in the east and sets in the west everyday.  I could easily stand in my front yard and argue the obvious fact that the sun is circling around the earth.  However, what seems obvious can be turned upside down by one elementary school teacher with a couple of coat hangers, some styrofoam balls and a light bulb.  Once the light is turned on and the balls are spinning, the earth's rotation won't be questioned again.  After seeing it in motion, I might even be able to explain it to someone else.

This is sorta' what I experienced in my spiritual walk a few years ago.  ~ I had always believed that Jesus was God.  There's God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit.  One God; three Persons. ~ The problem is, it isn't so obvious to others.  When my belief was challenged, I didn't have a fancy styrofoam model to explain it.  Out of frustration, and maybe even a little doubt, I delved into my Bible to find out what it really does say about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.  Are they all really God?  Here's what I found:

  • Jesus quotes the commandments in Luke 4, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve."  If Jesus isn't God, then by his own definition accepting worship (such as He did in Matthew 2 when the wise men came to worship him at his birth, and later in John 9:38 after he heals a man) would have been considered blasphemy (a sin) and his death on the cross would therefore be meaningless.
  • If Jesus isn't God, he couldn't forgive sins as seen in the account of the paralytic (Matthew 9).  Anytime Jesus forgave sins, He was displaying/claiming his diety ~ the religious leaders recognized this (read John 5:18).
  • Isaiah 6-9 holds much prophecy about Jesus and specifically calls him "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
  • Jesus calls out who he is in the end of John chapter 8.  He even calls himself "I am" which is the name God told Moses to use when speaking to Pharaoh in Exodus chapter 3.
  • In Matthew, Jesus gives the great commission saying, "Go... baptizing them in the name (singular) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..." If Father, Son and Holy Spirit were different gods, then the Bible would say, "Go... baptizing them in the names (plural) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..."
  • In the Creation story in Genesis, "Then God says, 'Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness...'" (it DOES NOT say, "Then the gods said... " NOR does it say, "Let me make man in my own image..")
Jesus was there in the beginning.  He created the sun.  He set the planets into motion.  Then He came as a model to help explain it.  Check this out!  Psalm 23.  As you read this very well known piece of old testament scripture, take some time with these phrases:
  • The Lord is my shepherd
  • He makes me lie down in green pastures
  • He leads me beside still waters
  • You prepare a table before me (a meal perhaps?)
  • my cup overflows (a meal with leftovers perhaps?)
Now go to any one of the three accounts of Jesus feeding the 5000 (Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44), and John 6:1-14)  See if Jesus isn't modeling.
  • He is the shepherd (He refers to the people as sheep without a shepherd specifically in Mark 6:34)
  • He commands the people to sit on the green grass (all three accounts)
  • This takes place next to the water (all three accounts)
  • He prepares a meal for 5000 men (plus presumably some women and children) with five loaves of bread and 2 fish
  • There's enough leftovers to fill 12 baskets.
I see no distinction between the "Lord" of Psalm 23 and the "Lord" of any of the other Psalms.  If I say the Lord is my Shepherd, and Jesus is the good Shepherd (John 9), then it's obvious to me, Jesus is Lord and He is God.  I think I grew up believing that, but after digging in, now I can say that I know it.  ~ It's Plain & Simple as That.

  1. Beautiful, Stacy. Just beautiful. I love the correlation between Psalm 23 and Jesus feeding the 5,000. Wow. God's Word is so alive and active. Thank you for sharing this with us all. I pray it will provide the intellect someone needs to believe that Jesus is God.

  3. Greetings Stacy

    It is equally clear in Scripture that Jesus identified his Father
    as the only true GOD & the only GOD
    [John 17.3, 5.44];
    whilst in contrast the ONE GOD, the Father affirmed that Jesus is His Son.
    [Matt 3.17, 16.16-17]

    So why did Jesus receive worship? Because he is both King & Messiah!
    (Matt 2.2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.)

    John 1.49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

    Kings & dignitaries are scripturally worshipped as such; but GOD alone is worshipped as GOD!
    (Compare 1 Chron 29.20 - was David, GOD???
    See also The Worship of Christ
    &
    Defining the Term "Worship" )

    Jesus forgave sins in the same manner that his disciples would go on to do so
    [John 20.23]
    i.e. by authority - Jesus was (the disciples were) authorized to do so!
    That is, Jesus forgave sins by GOD-given authority:

    Matthew 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man
    hath power [authority] on earth to forgive sins,
    (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,)
    Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
    Matthew 9.8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power [authority] unto men.
    See also Jesus forgave sins

    Isaiah 9.6-7 is a prophecy about a child who would be born and be given the throne of David & the Kingdom of David/GOD;
    this is something that the ONE GOD will perform!

    Of course, this is a prophecy about the Messiah, GOD's human Son; whilst in contrast, the ONE GOD Himself will accomplish this;
    and give to Jesus His Son,
    the throne & kingdom of David in fulfillment of His promises.
    [Luke 1.32-33, Acts 2.30]
    Concerning the meaning of the names given in Isaiah 9.6 - see Concerning Isaiah 9:6

    Matthew 28.19 says absolutely nothing about a God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. One God; three Persons.
    In fact, the whole Bible is silent in this regard - rather Scripture affirms
    solely ONE GOD, the Father.
    (1 Cor 8:4) ... that there is none other God but one.
    (1 Cor 8:6) But to us there is but one God, the Father, ...

    Jesus is therefore the ONE GOD's Son.
    And the holy spirit is simply
    the spirit of the ONE GOD;
    the Father's operational presence and power.

  4. Genesis 1.26 may not say
    "Let me make man in my own image.."
    However what does verse 27 actually say?
    Genesis 1.27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

    GOD alone created man as affirmed by Jesus His Son:

    Matthew 19.4 ... Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
    (Not 'we' that made them!)

    Mark 10.6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
    (Not 'we' made them! Therefore, it ought to be obvious that Jesus is talking about GOD his Father)

    Compare: Mark 13.19 ... from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

    Therefore, Jesus was not there in the beginning -
    because he wasn't even conceived/born yet!
    1 Peter 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

    Rather, on the 6th day, the angels
    (Job 38.4-7)
    witnessed the creation of man -
    however it was GOD alone (cp. Isa. 44.24) that created man.

    All the miracles performed by our Lord Jesus were in actuality performed by the ONE GOD his Father working through and in His human Son:

    Acts 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by [through] him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
    Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

    Jesus confirmed this fact:
    John 14.10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
    11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

    There is in fact a very important distinction between the "Lord" of Psalm 23
    and our "Lord" Jesus Christ.
    It begins with Psalm 110.1
    The first word 'LORD' in that verse is the same word as seen in Psalm 23;
    however the 2nd word 'Lord' is the Hebrew word, adoni; which is never ever used in ref. to Almighty GOD.
    (See A Mistake Which Outdoes All Mistakes! )

    So indeed, It's Plain & Simple That:
    that there is solely ONE GOD,
    the Father.
    And Jesus of Nazareth,
    is the one man, the one human being
    whom Almighty GOD raised from the dead, made him,
    both Lord and Christ,
    and exalted him to His right hand.

    Hence, Jesus of Nazareth is
    the Lord Jesus Christ,
    a man approved of Almighty GOD,
    who is currently at the right hand of the ONE GOD in the heavens.
    Whom we await for his return.

    (1 Cor 8:4) ... there is none other God but one.
    (1 Cor 8:6) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

    (1 Tim 2:5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men,
    the man Christ Jesus;

    (1 Th 1:9-10) For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
